Open a lightning network to a selected node in the electrum
Electrum, the popular open source Bitcoin client for Windows, MacOS and Linux, offers a convenient method for managing Bitcoin network connections. However, not all nodes are available in the Electrum Open Channel (OC) dialog box. In this article, we examine how to open a lightning network to a selected node in the electrum.
Why can’t I open a channel to a particular node?
When trying to open an OC channel with the electrum, you may not be able to connect to the specified node for various reasons:
* The node is not enabled : The node is disabled or unavailable.
* The node is not connected to the network : The node connection with the bitcoin network is lost or dropped.
* The node has many connections.
How to open a lightning network for a selected node in the electrum
To open the lightning network, follow these steps to a selected node:
- Open the electrum and find the Open Channel dialog box.
- Click the “trampoline” option at the top of the dialog.
- In the trampoline menu, select “Connect a …” (not available in the current version of the electrum).
- Instead, click “Special” or “Settings” to access special settings.
To access special settings
In special settings you will find a new option called “Using an external connection”. To use this service:
- Click “Edit” in the upper right corner of the Trampulin menu.
- In the editing window, scroll down to the “trampoline” section and select “Using an external connection” box.
- Set the desired node as the target in the “target node” field.
Set the target node
To select a specific node of the new channel:
- Click the “Edit” button.
- In the editing window, scroll down to the “trampoline” section and enter the node address (for example,
npx@
) in the “target node” field.
Confirm a relationship
After setting the target, the electrum attempts to create a new channel for the node. You can check this by checking the Electrum wallet balance or viewing the history of the transaction.
Keep in mind that the opening of the lightning network requires a stable and connected connection to a particular node. If you face any problems during the process, you may have to restart the electrum or wait a few minutes before trying again.
More tips
- Be sure to use the correct wallet address for the target node.
- Be aware of the electrum network congestion and consider using another method if it affects the connection speed.
- Keep in mind that opening new channels can affect the stability of the electrum client.
